THE DAMBUSTERS TOUR – new hotel

We are delighted to offer this exceptional holiday, located in the beautiful village of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. The elegant, history rich and delightful Petwood Hotel will play host and was the home of 617 Squadron, otherwise known as The Dambusters. The elegant Edwardian Spa resort of Woodhall Spa, came about by accident in 1811 when John Parkinson made several failed attempts to find coal. Having dug a 1000 foot deep shaft, it subsequently filled with spring water. It was then discovered that the iodine-rich water had healing benefits and the Spa Baths were built so that visitors could ‘take the waters’, with hotels soon following. Regarded as one of Lincolnshire’s most attractive villages, Woodhall Spa is famous for its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, and is the perfect location for a holiday.

The Petwood Hotel

The elegant Petwood Hotel is set in 30 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and woodland. The name originates from the wealthy Baroness Grace van Eckhardstein who loved coming to Woodhall Spa and referred to it as her favourite wood, her pet wood. The Baroness had lavish tastes and the hotel started being built in 1905 in grand style. The beautiful gardens were designed and landscaped by Harold Peto, a world famous gardener of the time. Today, the hotel still boasts the lavish interior the Baroness wished for, coupled with modern facilities. There are 53 lovely bedrooms which have all the amenities you would associate with a quality hotel including luxury toiletries, tea/coffee facilities, Wi-Fi, hairdryer, ironing facilities and more. During WWI, the hotel became a hospital for injured servicemen. In WWII, the hotel was home to the famous 617 Squadron, the Dambusters. The Squadron bar at the hotel hosts a range of impressive memorabilia. Sit in the bar and imagine the officers and men celebrating when news came through. that the Dambusters had succeeded in their mission, fascinating.
